Reinventing the Bundle Builder to Reach 20% Subscription Uptake

Primal Kitchen teamed up with Prismfly’s team, who’ve built dozens of data-driven bundling experiences, to overhaul their own. The rebuild added subscription, tiered savings, and a streamlined interface – resulting in 20% subscription uptake across several hundred orders while increasing bundle orders and their average size.

Client Profile & Project Overview

Primal Kitchen, a leading clean-label food brand known for high-quality healthy condiments, pantry staples, sauces, and supplements, turned to Prismfly to reimagine its bundling experience. 

The goal: provide a branded, flexible, mobile-friendly Bundler that supports one-time purchases, subscriptions, discount tiers, and seamless backend configurability. All while preserving performance and brand aesthetic.

Strategy & Approach

The team leveraged Primal Kitchen’s existing product-card components and collection layouts to ensure code consistency and speed. We introduced subscription options, tiered discounts, and dietary filters, enabling customers to easily build custom bundles. 

The admin side was configured so the Primal Kitchen team could manage eligible products via Shopify without further dev work. On the UX side, bundle items appear as grouped cards in the cart, especially optimized for mobile, and hover states highlight savings and product details.

Challenges

Balancing performance and scalability under tight timelines meant avoiding regressions and rework. The bundler needed to integrate seamlessly into the existing site without sacrificing speed. 

Additionally, introducing subscription options required thoughtful UX design and clear product messaging to encourage customers to try a new purchasing habit.

Results & Outcome

Within the 1st month post-launch, the new Bundler drove strong demand, with 20% of bundle purchasers opting into subscription while also increasing average bundle size given the modest 10% savings reward for increasing bundle size.  

Mobile purchase flows became smoother, and the admin-friendly configurability built a foundation for future growth without heavier maintenance.

What Worked, and Why

  • Tailored logic built around Primal Kitchen’s actual bundling patterns unlocked outcomes impossible with out-of-the-box solutions.
  • Implementation of a simple 10% discount successfully grew the average bundle size without margin erosion, validating a strategy based on established purchasing data.
  • Have your cake and eat it too! It's possible to increase bundles while increasing bundle subscribers while increasing bundle sizes when you provide a highly-experienced data and design team with the right brand data.

The result: a bundler that transformed from a feature into a growth engine, that is scalable, user-friendly, and aligned with brand ambitions.
